Organ Systems

Actual organs: heart, lungs, live, etc...

A look at body composition at the level of organs

At this level, we are looking at 'adipose tissue' itself. Highly relevant to obesity.

Organ Systems

Organ name

Here's a list of 20 organ systems and components in the human body, ranked approximately by weight. Please note that these percentages are rough estimates and can vary based on factors such as age, sex, and overall health:

  1. Muscular system - includes all skeletal muscles - around 35-40% of body weight

  2. Skeletal system - includes bones, cartilage, tendons, and ligaments - around 15-20% of body weight

  3. Adipose tissue - includes fat storage - around 10-25% of body weight (varies greatly depending on the individual)

  4. Skin (integumentary system) - includes skin, hair, and nails - around 4-6% of body weight

  5. Liver - part of the digestive system - around 2-3% of body weight

  6. Brain - part of the nervous system - around 2% of body weight

  7. Lungs - part of the respiratory system - around 1-1.5% of body weight

  8. Heart - part of the cardiovascular system - around 0.5% of body weight

  9. Kidneys - part of the urinary system - around 0.4-0.5% of body weight

  10. Blood vessels - part of the cardiovascular system - around 3-5% of body weight

  11. Spleen - part of the immune and lymphatic systems - around 0.2-0.3% of body weight

  12. Pancreas - part of the digestive and endocrine systems - around 0.1-0.2% of body weight

  13. Stomach - part of the digestive system - around 0.1-0.6% of body weight

  14. Small intestine - part of the digestive system - around 1-1.5% of body weight

  15. Large intestine - part of the digestive system - around 0.7-1% of body weight

  16. Bladder - part of the urinary system - less than 0.1% of body weight

  17. Testes (males) - part of the reproductive system - around 0.1% of body weight

  18. Ovaries (females) - part of the reproductive system - less than 0.1% of body weight

  19. Thyroid gland - part of the endocrine system - less than 0.1% of body weight

  20. Thymus - part of the immune and endocrine systems - less than 0.1% of body weight
