The Last Chance Diet

The Last Chance Diet is a weight loss plan that gained popularity during the 1970s. This diet is considered a type of very low calorie diet (VLCD) and, in fact, is one of the most extreme examples. It was invented by Dr. Roger Linn, who detailed his method in the book "The Last Chance Diet" published in 1976.

Principles of The Last Chance Diet

The primary principle of the Last Chance Diet is to drastically reduce caloric intake by consuming a very low-calorie liquid protein diet. This diet encourages participants to consume a drink made primarily from hydrolyzed collagen (also known as collagen protein isolate), derived from the by-products of animal slaughter such as hides, bones, and other unused parts.

The premise was that the body would go into ketosis (a metabolic state in which your body uses fat, instead of glucose, for energy) due to the extreme calorie deficit, and the protein would help spare muscle mass.

The dieter would consume the protein drink (which was essentially devoid of essential nutrients) and nothing else, leading to an intake of about 300-400 calories a day.

Controversies and Risks

The Last Chance Diet is notorious for its severe health risks. Numerous dieters who followed this plan suffered from dangerous side effects and, tragically, the diet was linked to numerous deaths. These health issues were largely due to malnutrition and electrolyte imbalances. The body was not receiving the necessary nutrients and minerals it needed to function properly, leading to heart damage among other serious health problems.

The diet's significant lack of essential vitamins, minerals, fatty acids, and adequate protein made it both nutritionally deficient and dangerous. The hydrolyzed collagen in the drink is an incomplete protein source, lacking in certain essential amino acids that the body needs but cannot produce on its own.

The Last Chance Diet ultimately led to the increased regulation and oversight of weight loss programs and products, as the serious health risks became apparent.


The Last Chance Diet serves as a reminder of the dangers of extreme diets and the importance of balanced, nutritious eating for sustainable weight loss.
