Welcome to Holland Clinic's new patient portal. This is the starting point for our current, active patients to get online information and help with their individual weigh loss issues. In other words, if you're a patient of ours right now, chance are that you're in the right place.

Help With Our Diet
The diet that doctor Holland generally suggests for his patients and has probably suggested for you (unless he has specifically told you otherwise) is a modified low-fat, low-inflammatory, low fructose, higher fiber pre-pro-biotic diet. If that sounds like a mouthful, well, that's why we're here to help. Here are the general details which we HOPE you already know something about.
  • Low fat-High fiber: Our diet is called "20-Twenty" which means "twenty fat grams per day and twenty grams of fiber per day. 
  • Low fructose. Fructose which is found in high fructose corn syrup, agave syrup, fruit juice and table sugar is an obesogen; a chemical that promotes obesity when consumed in LARGE amounts. Small amounts of fructose such as that found in WHOLE (but not squeezed) fruit and the small amounts added to foods like bread don't make any difference, but big doses of fructose found in sugary sodas or candy are bad news.
  • Pre-biotics: Pre-biotic fiber like INULIN (not to be confused with INSULIN) promotes the growth of "good" bacteria in the gut and there is growing scientific evidence that these good bacteria can help us lose weight. Probiotics like yogurt have the same effects.

Exercise is the key not so much to weight LOSS but instead to long-term weight maintenance. This means two things:
  • Exercise can seem very slow and frustrating in the beginning
  • Exercise only really begins to "Show" after many months have elapsed
In other words, exercise is frustrating for a lot of us. Our philosophy is basically that the most important thing you can do to ensure that exercise will actually work for your weight loss is to not give it up and THAT in turn is all about finding something you TRULY enjoy. We don't mean something you have to "psych" yourself into enjoying but something that is actually fun for YOU...personally. In other words, we want to help you make exercise feel like play.
