Exercise Duration

The length of time that you SHOULD exercise depends in large part upon the length of time that you WILL exercise and that,  in turn, is a function of your lifestyle and your interests. In other words, it makes no sense to tell you to exercise an hour daily if you lack the time or the notion is totally repulsive to you. Thus, the following statements about exercise duration are true:

  • Any exercise at all is far better than none
  • The ideal duration for most American adults is probably between thirty minutes and an hour (performed three to five times per week) and AFTER getting into good physical condition.
  • For beginners or for people who have not exercised in a long time, it is best to start with five to ten minutes of very slow walking (or a similar exercise).
